The History of Pokemon TCG Power Creep
Переглядів 328 тис.3 роки тому
Exploring why Pokemon trading cards have become much more powerful over time, and how this has affected the game. I've always been curious about this topic and finally decided to try making a video about it. 100 hours of re-scripting and editing later, it's finally done! I'll definitely be making better content in the future now that I've learned what the process is like. Enjoy! These are the m...
This e-series area looks legitimately more interesting and diverse, while also having more natural and believable traditions from area to area than Paldea (they actually put a water town at the edge of a desert in Scarlet and Violet). This area also looks more compact and convenient to traverse than Paldea, that wouldn’t require a bike or a ride pokemon to travel around.
“Crystal type pokemon” sound a lot like terastalising pokemon. It makes you wonder…
Thanks for the video!
I play most techs and I can say without a doubt yugioh has the highest power creep for sure
This video is so refreshing, I loved the lore cards and the xy rift theme was downright horrifying. You think Legends ZA might take some inspo?
love your videos on these topics! makes me think it could have been cool to have "in-game" art for the cards that lets you see two at once and use sprites for the attacks, and then also "hd showcase" art that uses the sprite-layering technique from yugioh for when you're not in a fight (though i guess now youre using up a poopload of extra memory).
magi nation also has really cool lore in and outside of its cards. the lore of that game was also directly added to based on the outcomes of the tournaments they held.
In hindsight, I'm glad Wizards lost it. Look at how they treat Magic today. A real shame.
I hate to be the "erm actually" individual here but I believe Impostor Oak was in the Pokémon Adventures manga.
I love this
I love Holon.
here after SV06's dragapult EX. 320 hp, phantom dive hits for 200 for just a fire and psychic en, does 60 damage to the bench too. HFS. not even a "discard all energy after using this attack" or a 3-prize KO or whatever, no downsides. there's no strategy here. it's just pay to win oh and if the dragapult somehow get's KO'd, just have a SWSH12 regidrago vstar ready to go. apex dragon, use an attack from a dragon pokemon in your discard pile. dragapult can sweep you from the grave. you don't even have to take the risk of getting the dragapult built up on your bench, just get it discarded
"I think we should have less types, so the game is more fun" me: yes. 100%. agree. Ends the video by creating a new type me: well... he's making a good point.
Great vid, thanks!
I loved Pokemon TCG from Base Set through Diamond & Pearl. It's amazing that the game had no HP power creep until DP, and even then it wasn't that bad. Everything went to crap from Black & White onward, especially by Sun & Moon. What's the point of using evolution trees, a unique mechanic to this game, when you can just slap a 300 HP BEEG STOMPY out there and reduce the game from a 6v6 Pokemon battle to "who can KO BEEG STOMPIES twice?" I played in online tournaments and even won, but I quit the game years ago because of all the EX/GX/VZ/All-the-X whores. I miss the days when ex were moderately stronger at a cost for risk-reward factor and had, at most, 150 HP. Neo, the Ruby & Sapphire series, and DP were the most fun I ever had with the game.
WotC added a few cool things to Pokemon TCG, like the energy symbol stacking, the horizontal bottom card info, and especially the pack promo art diversity. But ultimately they screwed up more than they helped. Had I known as a kid that WotC was giving me less valuable packs, I'd have rioted for their immediate destruction. Also, the countless card translation errors are just embarrassing. Hire a Japanese-English translator, gimme a break. Good riddance, I say.
Also fun fact: the Metronome removing energy from Blaine's Charizard is also an instance of WOTC following their own rules incorrectly. In Magic, if a creature gains the ability of another creature that refers to itself, the copied ability refers to the creature that is copying, so that would work like Metronome was meant to
WHAT?! Wotc making a dingus out of a card game? Can't believe that, never would have seen that coming...
Still playing on gameboy gonna have to get the ganeshsrk😂 for them cards 😅
The Holon concept is incredibly beloved by me, I pinch my brow every time pokemon decides to introduce blase gimmicks like terastalization when delta species are RIGHT THERE. It would seriously add such a fun and interesting twist to the games.
I miss the og PTCGO... you were able to still use HGSS era decks, and I played with a feraligatr deck almost every day until it shut down </3 I was even able to take down powerful modern decks by building up Hypnos with sleep abilities, stacking energies on Exeggutors and Slowbros for multiplied attacks, and of course Feraligatr prime.
This is one of the best videos on Pokemon I have ever seen. Omg brings back SUCH nostalgia. I competed in a tournament in 1999 at age 11 and am just now picking up the game again 25 years later!
Hope you enjoy it. Personally, I think the Pokemon TCG is awesome, except for all the 300 HP "Basic" EX/GX/VX cards that ruin the premise of evolving to power up. The items, Supporter, and other Pokemon cards are great, though.
I much prefer your explanation of the Holon lore and how it's NOT connected to Mirage Forest
Is that A+down glitch also on gbc?
if you have the North American/Australian version, yup (assuming I understood your question)
@@Oranos2115 yeah u did ;)
what's the music at 6:30 called I'v been looking for it my entire life
What's the name of the card in the thumbnail?
We need a Greek enspired region with delta species as the gimmick
22:45 I can't believe I didn't know some of these shortcuts
29:13 How does Gambler help counter the Barrier strategy? They get new cards, but Barrier is still in effect.
Sequel?!
What's the intro song?
It's the stage select from Bomberman 64. I made a list of songs I used in the description under "sources".
Isn’t there a part 2 game that never came out in America?
Interesting video, the mistranslations and differences in rulings between the two versions is similar to how YGO OCG and TCG have different rulings even now. Though.. Bro's calling out the JP ads as weird when yall were obsessed with the Pokerap when that came out. It's the same thing just in Japanese-
this was fantastic, well done
I'm really enjoying the art inspired from Area Zero in these recent expansions, I wonder what they'll come up with when Legends Z-A comes out
Wonder if the legends ZA game will have inspiration from breakthrough
🎉❤
The city with no map bears a very very strong resemblance to the city in the Latias Latios movie and its very cool to me
the 3d graphics of those old sky ridge commercials are better than s/v imo lol
damn i can already tell this is gonna b a cool video, well done

I commented one year ago but now I'm back because my opinions have changed. I think the perfect way to fix the Pokemon TCG types is to have as many types as you want BUT to streamline the ENERGIES. The game should only have 6 different kinds of Energies max, plus colourless. Get rid of Fairy, Steel, and Darkness Energies altogether. Psychic Energies - used for Psychic, Ghost, Dark, and Fairy Types Fighting Energies - used for Rock, Ground, Steel, and Fighting types Grass Energies - used for Grass, Bug, and Poison types Water Energies - used for Water and Ice types Fire Energies - used for Fire and some Dragon types Lightning Energies - used for Electric and some Dragon types Colorless Energies - used for Normal and Flying types This removes the awkwardness of having Dark being weak to Grass, Fire being weak to Ice, Lightning being weak to Fighting, etc. You could maybe even streamline some of the types a little bit, like combining Rock and Ground into an Earth type or Dark and Ghost into a Darkness type. With more types to play with, a Pokemon card could even have two simultaneous weaknesses and two simultaneous Resistances, leading to more diverse gameplay. The only problem would be Lightning, which only has 1 weakness in the video games.
subscribed! great vibes
49:46 what about the radiant/pokekyun collection? :( the unique blurbs replacing the dex entries were my favorite part aside from the unique holofoil prints
17:48 wait EN ver omg
Anything Pokemon from the 90's makes me wanna cry. I'm not even a huge fan, but i was a 90's kid and the nostalgia hurts soooo bad. Kids today don't know what love from a developer is. They get treated like trash now. creators used to love thier audience back. Now they love money. 💔
I know a lot of players love the TCG but imo the fact that Pokemon are not typed correctly makes the card game dull and unplayable. Barely any dual typing. Rock and ground are fighting, lmao. Each card has their own weaknesses which don't even match the actual Pokemon. If it wasn't for the brand and neat art this would be probably one of the most forgettable card games. Pokemon and RPGs in general are already borderline card games. They should just cut this oddity and port the game to card format. Draw cards as moves or something.
Dragon types were colourless for the first 5 sets of the Black and White era, it wasn't until Dragons Exalted that they introduced dragon types, which is why stuff like Haxorus and Druddigon were colorless while dual types like Hydreigon and Kyurem were their secondary types.
Putting a theorist cap, did the Holon Tower cause Pokemon's primary type to become their tera type?
Really good video, thanks for summarizing that all. It was amazing to see. Especially the Holon and the Parallel World stuff from X and Y. I base a lot of my characters around Holon so it felt special to see it explained this way.
